Columbus-Under the direction of coconductors Leigh Briggs and Michelle Holly, the Capital Pride Band is embarking on its sixth year of performing in Pride festivities by setting a bold, exciting agenda with hopes of delighting the band's performing members and audiences alike.
Following a successful spring concert season capped by its presentation of "Life's a Stage" at the Capitol Theater, the band has been rehearsing for Pride since early April.
Their Pride month agenda begins with an appearance at the Stonewall Center on High on June 7 as one of the entertaining groups at the Pride kick-off weekend outdoor concerts. The next weekend, CapPride will hit the road as they trek to Indianapolis to perform in that city's Pride Parade and festival. One of the highlights there will be a joint stage performance with their Lesbian Gay Band Association sister band, the Pride of Indy.
CapPride's marching season will culminate with its participation in the Columbus
Pride Holiday, one of the band's favorite events. The much-anticipated day will start with a sneak preview performance at a house party near Goodale Park. Then musicians, flag auxiliaries, bannerettes, twirlers, and color guard will proudly strut their stuff en masse, enjoying every step along the parade route.
Resident "band mom" Betty Cracker always adds to the pageantry, while a hardworking group of "volunqueers" helps keep the group hydrated and organized through the stage performance at the festival.
Musical selections for Pride 2008 include "Soak Up the Sun," "These Boots Are Made For Walking" and "Proud Mary," to name a few.
"Both Michelle and I are excited that the band has set a goal of sixty musicians," Briggs said proudly. "This year's version of the CapPride band has the potential to be the largest in sheer number and sound to ever march in the Columbus parade."

Band.
Invite straight friends and family to Pride festivities
by Cheri Meyers
Columbus-For the fourth consecutive year, SpeakOut members and supporters will participate in the Columbus Pride parade and festival on June 28. Each year the organization invites anyone who supports equality for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, to join them in the parade.
"Every year we start out the parade with members and friends of our organization," said Susan Johnston, a SpeakOut board member. "But by the end of the parade, we always pick up spectators along the parade route who have been moved to join us. We love that!"
SpeakOut especially encourages members of the LGBT community to bring their allies to the parade and festival.
Encouraging straight supportive family, friends and co-workers to take part in the Pride holiday is so important. Pride is a

special day for the gay community and it is the perfect opportunity to talk about topics and issues that might not come up in every day conversations. There are plenty of opportunities during the festival for allies to get involved by visiting LGBTA organizations or even by volunteering. Don't assume they aren't interested, either. Invite them.
Speak Out will continue its grassroots advocacy and education in the fall. The organization will visit the Mt. Vernon and Urbana areas as they address same-sex marriage with a panel and the showing of the film, Tying the Knot. The group will also visit local high school Gay-Straight Alliances to encourage advocacy after graduation.
For more information about SpeakOut's monthly meetings, weekly news "e-updates" and future events can be found on their website, www.SpeakOutcols.org.
